RCO Waste Minimization Award Winners
The Recycling Council of Ontario presented the winners of the 2006 Ontario Waste Minimization Awards in Toronto, Thursday, October 19, 2006. (See end of this document for list of winners.)
Fairmont Royal York Hotel, Metro Toronto Convention Centre and Niagara Region took some of the top honours, as finalists gathered at the Old Mill Inn and Spa in Toronto for the Recycling Council of Ontario's 2006 Ontario Waste Minimization Awards.
The awards reflect waste reduction activities in many sectors at the provincial level and were celebrated at the culmination of Waste Reduction Week in Canada (October 16-22) a national event that enjoys participation from every level of society across the country.
The Ontario Waste Minimization Awards attract nominees from every corner and aspect of Ontario life and the event offers a forum to recognize the achievements of those organizations, municipalities, educational institutions and individuals who have gone above and beyond to advance sustainability through waste minimization.
Everyone who submits a nomination is a winner as we collectively move beyond recycling to eliminating waste at its source. Accounting for all waste in the life cycle of a particular product or service is a key aspect of social, civil and corporate responsibility that must be embraced as we move forward.
"The winners of this year's Ontario Waste Minimization Awards demonstrate the renewed commitment toward addressing the waste issues we face in Ontario today," says Jo-Anne St. Godard, Executive Director of the Recycling Council of Ontario. "The champions honoured in Toronto have 'set the bar' for others and are proof that environmental sustainability is achievable."
The Recycling Council of Ontario is a not-for-profit organization with a 28-year history. Their mandate is to minimize society's impact on the environment by eliminating waste. The RCO mission is to inform and educate about how waste is generated, how it can be avoided and the more efficient use of resources.
