E-Waste Recycling Pilot

Ever wonder happened to those old computers that were collecting dust in TPC storage rooms? And what about the old servers, tape players, cable and monitors that have been pulled out of service as part of modernization projects?

Well, fromJuly to December 2007, TPC ran a pilot e-waste recycling project to find a framework for environmentally responsible recycling of obsolete electronic equipment.

Led by Dennis Graham, Senior Manager, Environment, the pilot recycling project diverted over 52,000 kg of e-waste from landfill.

Among the many contributors to the success of the project are Rachael Gerry, HR-Organizational Health & Wellness; TPC’s Andy Libby, Bruce Graham, Tony Mountford, Dan Loucks and Wayne Chin; Radio’s John McCarthy; I.T.’s Robert Ayotte; Finance’s Mike Sedej, Frank Riva and Rick Wiebe; and Broadcast Engineering’s Mark Desbiens. Special thanks also to Real Estate for providing space for the project and to Jeff Herman, Guillermo Lara and Marcantony Luciano for their contributions.

During National Waste Reduction Week, some employees also recycled their domestic electronic waste, sending an additional 680kg of e-waste to the pilot project’s recycler,Global Electric Electronic Processing Inc. (GEEP) in Barrie, Ontario.

Even though the pilot project has ended, if you still have obsolete ewaste fromyour department, please ask your supervisor get in touch with Rachael Gerry at ext. 8585.
